AU Optronics showed off a demo mobile phone with a screen, which they claim is the screen for mobile devices with the shortest edge in the smartphone world; edge of only 1 mm. Or to be more precise, when a touch sensor is put into the device, it can be integrated into a cell phone so it will have an edge width of only one millimeter. The demo phone has a screen diagonal of 4.46-inch and comes with a high-definition resolution. The company stated that they used their own technology for the "super thin edge" method and LTPS (low temperature poly-silicon) method.

They also said that they have successfully developed an Ahva matrix with a diagonal of 3 to 15.6 inches for use in devices such as smartphones, digital cameras, e-readers, the screen in a car etc. Models with a diagonal of 4.97 inch (Full HD, or 1080x1920 giving 443 pixels per inch) went into mass production and are also using the LTPS method, therefore having a very narrow margin.

But that's not all. AU Optronics has an OLED screen with a pixel density between 200 and 300 pixels per inch, this means a 4.65-inch AMOLED screen with its own schedule of (sub) pixels, which AU Optronics says has a density of 317 PPI. Of course, they cannot be avoided so IGZO screens will be offering 10-inch IGZO screen tablets with 2560x1600 pixel resolution. That screen's light transmission is increased by 12%, and the thickness needed for backlight is reduced by 60% compared to conventional models making screen only 1.5 mm thick and more energy efficient.

Do you think these improvements will bring better devices, or will they end up bring dropped in minor refreshes that will simply cost you more. Let us know in our Forum.
