Microsoft finally starting to give free licences for Windows Phone OS

Written by

Reading time is around minutes.

Last month Microsoft has announced that they will drastically slash the price of licenses for Windows Phone operating system to manufacturers of mobile devices. But now it appears that some of the bolder speculations how some companies will not have to pay any fee to Microsoft to use the WP platform were true.

This move could be another in a series of steps that the giant from Redmond is taking to popularize its mobile OS and join the fight on equal terms with Android and iOS. According to The Times of India, free license for now are getting Indian companies Karbonn and Lava, manufacturers of cheap mobile phones that have produced devices based on Android, and only in the coming months will begin shipping the new models with the Windows Phone operating system.

Apparently their requirement to migrate to this platform was to give them a license for free, to which they agreed at Microsoft. If Microsoft decides to do the same with other, more popular manufacturers, we could see more interesting WP devices in near future.
