Sony sells Gracenote

The American branch of Sony decided to sell the Gracenote service, which stores metadata about music, to media conglomerate Tribune for $170 million. Gracenote's vast database of music is used by many services for streaming content, mobile applications and multimedia systems in cars. The most famous among them are Spotify and Apple's services.

Gracenote database is searched up to 550 million times daily and search is conducted on metadata of about 180 million songs. The new owner plans to fit Gracenote into their service Tribune Media Service, which includes base of films and television shows, used by cable operators and various programming guides. Tribune will keep all 350 workers after the process of buying companies that will occur in the first quarter of 2014.

According to the agreement the previous owner Sony, who owned the company since 2008, will continue to use the Gracenote on their Sony Vaio devices, Music Unlimited Web service, and other services as before.
