OS X Mountain Lion killing battery life?
Shortly after the newest version of Apple's OS X operating system, Mountain Lion, became available Apple's support forum became swarmed with angry users complaining about shorter battery life. The claims came in after they upgraded to Mountain Lion. The latest version of OS X was released on July 25th, but it didnt take long before its first flaws came to the surface. Forum thread's about this problem has reached 34,200 views and is around 40 pages long. This would seem to show that the problem is very common. User jpengland96 first reported the issue saying: “I upgraded to mountail Lion and now my battery life is about half of what it was before upgrading. Shouldn't the update improve battery life? Also, what can I do about this?”.
Apple News 7-26-2012; Two Viruses And A Lame Defense.
Time Apple news for July 26th 2012. Today we have Apple’s “we should not have to pay” defense, a new worm in the iTunes store, and new Malware that has popped up for OSX users. These three things have loads of laughs and some interesting twists which we think you will enjoy. So up on deck first we will take a look at Apple’s we should not have to pay defense which they are presenting in one of the patent cases they have going with Samsung.
New Report Tries to Show that Apple is Beating Microsoft... The Raw Data Shows Something Different
Apple and their supporters love to have fun with numbers and statistics. One of the recent ones that has caught our eye is that ratio of Macs to PCs. I have seen titles that claim the PC is dead (again) and that the new numbers are “killing” Microsoft and a ton of other crap that is as ridiculous as the titles are fantastic. However, this is nothing new for Apple (or really any company, but Apple is the king of this type of spin). They love to work the numbers in any direction they can. They take the terms median, mean, and mode to a new level (all of those are methods of finding an “average”).
Microsoft Is Trying to Push a Car Up Hill With a Rope With the Windows 8 MetroUI
It is no secret that we are not fond of the direction that Microsoft is moving in with Windows 8. The new operating system with its phone and touch based MetroUI is a step back from what many feel a Windows system is supposed to be. What many wonder is why this push of the MetroUI and the cloud services that are linked to it.
Rich Text Format Flaw Leaves OSX and Windows Vulnerable If Running MS Office
In the IT world there was a time when we all feared the Marco viruses that could be embedded into Word, Excel and other Microsoft Office Products. It was bad enough at one point that I found a single system with over 3,200 counts of an Excel Macro virus (it replicated itself quite nicely). Back then it was common for IT to recommend the use of RTF (Rich Text Format) instead of .DOC for documents and there was even an option inside exchange to force the use of this format even if the end user has Word as their email editor.
Patch to OSX Lion Leaves Some Users' FileVault Passwords Exposed
The Apple Mythology continues to crumble as we hear (and have confirmed) that an update to Apple’s OSX Lion has exposed the passwords and questions to partitions protected with Apple’s FileVault. The issue rears its head when someone using FileVault updates to OSX 10.7.3. When this happens the update ends up writing the user’s credentials into the system’s plain-text debug file.
Second Java-Based Trojan Found in the Wild; Meet SabPub.a
Once upon a time Apple’s CEO and PR department constructed a mythology around the computers and devices that they sold. This mythology was needed to compete in the market and at the time was very good for business (even if it was less than honest). The mythology in question was that Apple products were somehow manufactured differently (or better) and that they were unable to become infected with malicious code that we all have come to know and loathe; the computer virus.
Apple Finally Releases a Patch for the Flashback Trojan After 600,000 Macs are Infected
There is nothing like a botnet to remind us all that there is truly no such thing as a “secure” operating system. For years Apple presented the Mac as impervious to viruses and Malware. They had commercials stating “Macs do not get viruses” and continued this mythology despite many Java, Flash and other attacks that existed in the wild. The fact that many of these were centered on pirated software or required user interaction did not deter the myth. Now with Flashback things have gotten very real very quickly.
Chicken Little tells us Lion kills our NAS devices
You may have heard that Apple’s new OS, Lion is making all of the NAS appliances incompatible. Well, we can tell you that the reports of these appliances demise have been greatly exaggerated. In fact three days before the launch we heard from multiple vendors that they have new firmware updates that will be available to keep compatibility with Lion and its new version of Time Machine.
NETGEAR has even sent us theirs and we are at work testing is on their ReadyNAS Pro 6. So when you hear about how this or that product does not work, remember… you are listening to people that are ALWAYS trying to get a scoop sometimes they might not take the extra time to verify things before they push something like this out.
Keep checking back as we work to demystify some of what is out there on the net and give you the straight information.
