Facebook Hate Speech AI Blocking The Wrong People

Hate is a powerful item and when it spills out it can be violent, rude and many other things. Because of the power of hate found in images, media, mems, etc., many have wondered why there are not more efforts to prevent the posting or sharing of such information. After all why would a media (social or other) want to allow hate speech or images posted on their pages. Facebook took this thought process and turned it into a policy that is designed to help stop hate speech from showing up. Now the system has inadvertently started censoring the wrong people.

The dire warnings of manipulation through mass media are usually seen as the arena of the paranoid. Most will label anyone that claims we are being controlled in this manner as part of the tin foil hat club. Now that it we find that Facebook itself might have participated in an event designed to manipulate people’s emotions through their news feeds these claims do not sound too crazy any more.

In line with earlier announcements, on the Facebook's F8 conference in San Francisco, Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled its new advertising service. It is a service called Audience Network, which serves to distribute ads in mobile applications from other manufacturers, all via Facebook.

iTunes gets a selfie category,

After the word "selfie" became so popular that was named word of the year and included in the Oxford dictionary, the term selfie received its section on the Apple's App Store. Within these categories are placed applications that enable users to capture and share their selfies. To further popularized this group of applications, Apple temporarily put the section on the iTunes cover page.

Twitter getting “old”

After Twitter released its annual financial results for the 2013. from which we could observe a slower increase in the number of users, discussion began on possible reasons for this negative trend . In the latest study, the research house eMarketer presented the growth projections of the number of users of the social network for the next five years. They predict that the negative trend will continue, so in 2014 the number of active users will increase by only 11.6%, and by the 2018 this will decrease even further to 6.4%.

It's official, Facebook has bought WhatsApp

Facebook has announced that they have reached a final agreement on the purchase of WhatsApp, a popular system for instant messaging via smartphone, for enormous figure of $16 billion in cash and stock (4 billion in cash and 12 billion in Facebook's stock). Additional three billion of US dollars in Facebook's shares will be offered to the founders of WhatsApp during the next four years after finalizing the contract.

Valve's Steam users earlier this week were allowed to enter their own tags in the games available on the greatest service for digital distribution of games. With that move they showed, wheter it was accidentally or intentionally, that they believe too much to "the internet".

LinkedIn looking for new sources of funding

LinkedIn has announced that they expects the revenue of the first quarter of this year to be at the level of $460 million, not $469 million as it was previously forecasted. Although a decline of 2%, the company's shares on the stock market sank by 15% after the announcement of these news.

At the end of August, Facebook started testing display of the currently most popular topics that are being discussed in the social network. The so-called "trending" section is located in the top right corner of the screen and displays to the user the most commonly mentioned phrases and words, with brief accompanying explanations.

Facebook has bought San Francisco startup, SportStream. SportStream created a service that is able analyze the content related to a sport or sports that appears on social networks.
