Ubisoft Responds to Watch Dog Hidden Files, Says it Was For Game Play

Written by

Reading time is around minutes.

Remember the news about the “locked” out graphical features in Watch Dogs? Well Ubisoft has finally released a statement about those options and a claim as to why they were hidden in the first place. According to Ubisoft the reason they were hidden had nothing to do with denying users game settings. It was all about “possible impacts on visual fidelity, stability, performance and overall gameplay quality”.

While the full explanation does make sense on one level there are still lingering concerns about the veracity of this statement. If the render settings were a performance or stability issue, why would you lead with those options as being a reason to pick up the game? In watching the game play demo they call out some of the advanced graphical features. To say that they were then removed (and poorly) does not exactly make sense.

There is also this line: “the mod in question (which uses those old settings) subjectively enhances the game’s visual fidelity in certain situations but also can have various negative impacts. Those could range from performance issues, to difficulty in reading the environment in order to appreciate the gameplay, to potentially making the game less enjoyable or even unstable.”

These are very generic claims to make for any software. Changing anything in a game can do those things depending on the system you are playing on. The statement that it can make the game less enjoyable is also a little bit of a stretch, unless it is causing the game to crash of render like a slide show I am not sure how improving graphics is going to negatively impact someone’s enjoyment of the game.

In the end we will probably never know the real story behind the hidden files and disabled features. There is too much attention on them now for Ubisoft to do anything other than issue this type of statement. We have a feeling that Ubisoft may continue to work on “fixing” these features and end up giving them to the gaming world. Conversely they could find a way to lock these graphical features even more with a future patch to the game. It will be interesting to see what they do.
