Apple is still the leading manufacturer of "smart" mobile phones in the U.S., and they were even able to take away part of the market from manufacturers of the devices based on Android, according to a new report by ComScore. Entire market of "smart" mobile phones in the U.S. continues to grow, and in January, 127 million people in the U.S. owned a smartphone, an increase of 7% compared to October.

In the three months period from November to January Apple has held an average of 37.8% of the market of smartphones in the U.S., which is 3.5 percentage points higher than in the previous three month period. But Google's Android is still by far leading in total with a share of 52.3%, although this is 1.3 percentage points lower than in October. Far behind the top two is, of course, the BlackBerry in third place with a share of 5.9%, followed by Microsoft with 3.1% and Symbian with 0.5% share.

Among the manufacturers of mobile phones in second place behind Apple is Samsung with a share of 21.4%, HTC is third with 9.7%, Motorola holds the fourth position with a share of 8.6%, while the share of 7% got fifth position for the LG.

[Ed - Although the US is what most companies will measure their sucess with it is important to note that Apple is not the leading smartphone maker in the world any longer. They wtill do command a good lead in the US where iPhones are still seen as a status symbol by many, but that is actually changing. Android is the leading phone OS and its share will continue to grow just as Samsung, HTC, and others will gain more share now that they are releasing full HD phones with larger screens and compelling feature sets. The next 18-24 months will be very telling for Apple's future.]
