New eBay logo

After seventeen years the famous shopping website has decided that they should change their old logo and replace it with a new, more professional one. The old logo has been here since 1995 when the company was founded as a set-time auction shopping site. Up until now they have had their 4 color letters overlapping one another and in different sizes, but the new logo looks a lot more linear and pretty modern I would say. It represents “a global online marketplace that offers a cleaner, more contemporary and consistent experience, with innovation that makes buying and selling easier and more enjoyable.” according to eBay Global Marketplaces President, Devin Wenig.

The new logo will keep the original colors, but it will be “ironed”, similar to new Microsoft logo. eBay stated that this was not an easy decision for them but “The time felt right.” The old logo will remain on the website until October. Their president stated “We’re incredibly proud of how eBay started and quickly grew into the world’s largest online marketplace. Auction-style listings, used goods, vintage items and quirky, one-of-a-kind finds are still a big part of what makes buying and selling on eBay special. We hope that’s always true. But we’ve evolved a lot in the past few years, and eBay is much more than auction-style listings today.“. With this new logo they show that they have grown and become a mature company.

As far as the company’s market status is concerned, eBay is doing rather well. Their shares gained more than 50% in value so far in 2012. Most of this is thanks to their growing business with Paypal payments. According to their second quarter earnings they had a 26% gain in revenue through Paypal and are looking forward to grow even more.  Wenig said “We’ve been building the new eBay. We’re creating the future again.” Does this mean we expect more changes on eBay in near future? Time will tell.

[Ed – eBay still remains one of the largest online auction sites on the internet. Unfortunately their ownership of PayPal has annoyed some online buyers and sellers. Most do not like having to use PayPal for to handle their transactions so while eBay might have updated their logo we all are still waiting on them to update their sometimes outrageous fees and requirement to use PayPal.]
