In the report to U.S. regulators Google revealed that since the beginning of 2013 theytook over 16 other companies, for which they spent 1.31 billion U.S. dollars.

It took them six years but finally they managed to get the task done. Google has succeeded in their long quest to record every corner of Venice for their service Street View. After they made virtual tours of Antarctica, the White House hallways, or underwater Great Barrier Reef available to everyone, at the end of this year on Street View you will be able to check the Venice from a street point of view.

Satellites are all over the place, used for everything from communication to research to photography.  No one really knows how many of these are pointed downward at the Earth, collecting visual data from virtually everywhere, or just how detailed the images they receive are.
