Yesterday we reported that Apple had lost a big to toss out a patent suit aimed at their iPhone and iPad in China. This was quite a blow to the company that has made China its manufacturing home. Normally Apple can get its way when dealing with patents simply because of the mythology they have created.  However this has not always held up in China as we have seen multiple decisions go against Apple.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has finally come out and publicly said what we have been reporting for the last couple of months. Things are changing from the Ballmer way. What that exactly means is yet to be determined though as Nadella is also a proponent of Microsoft’s cloud computing initiative: “We live in a mobile-first and cloud-first world”. In a memo to all Microsoft employees that is posted on Microsoft’s web site Nadella states that he wants Microsoft to “rediscover our soul – our unique core”.

Windows 9 Possibly Coming Late This Year (2014)

Unless you have been living under a rock you have probably heard the joke that Microsoft only makes a good OS every other try. We have been hearing that since the days that the Redmond crew pushed Windows ME out the door. Now there appears to be more proof to this tale as we have a string of consumer disappointing operating systems separated by much more accepted versions.

Macro Viruses Making a Comeback

In the mid-late 1990s the computer world was rocked by a new plague that spread very quickly through most Windows PCs that were running any form of Microsoft Office. This was the Macro virus and there were plenty of examples of these nasty little bits of Microsoft enabled code were written in a form of Visual Basic called VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). The reasons behind this are probably simple, they were too far ahead to back out..

If there was ever an indication that virtual reality might make it in the mainstream market it is when the web browsers start to support it. So far we have heard rumblings that Microsoft, Google and even Mozilla will be throwing their lot in with the VR gang. One of the big reasons for this is that Facebook has already pushed into that territory with their purchase of Oculus VR. After buying the virtual reality headset maker there have been multiple rumors of Facebook making a VR social world as an extension of their existing social network.

As we have reported on multiple occasions, Microsoft is working very hard to change the way that people see them. There are many reasons that they need to do this and it is a job that is not going to happen overnight. This has been a big part of what new CEO Satya Nadella has been doing since he took the top job at Microsoft. After changing the push for the Xbox One and Windows they are now trying to overcome the stigma dropped on them by Edward Snowden’s revelations of complicity with the NSA.

When Microsoft announced a new CEO in the form of Satya Nadella we felt that Microsoft would be staying the course laid out by Steve Ballmer. After all Nadella was a cloud guy himself and had put in a lot of time building Microsoft’s cloud offerings. However our minds were changed very early on when a few well-placed press released were called to our attention. It seems that Nadella had a much more complex game he wanted to play.

Microsoft and Google Bow to Kill Switches

It seems that Microsoft and Google have caved to government demands for “Kill Switches” in their phones. For those of you that might wonder what a Kill Switch is, it is an embedded mechanism that can render a phone inoperable from a remote location. Through the use of simple commands you can shut down the ability to make calls, receive data etc. and in some cases these switches would automatically turn on location features to allow the phones to be tracked.
