What Is Apple’s Fight against the VirnetX Patent Ruling Really About?
In November 2012 a jury found Apple guilty of patent infringement against patent troll… sorry non-participating entity, VirnetX. VirnetX claimed that Apple was in violation of a few patents that they own. These patents relate to video and text messaging. VirnetX has also filed a new suit against Microsoft for some of the same patents claiming that Microsoft’s license for Skype does not cover what they are using these technologies for. So you can see that VirnetX keeps themselves busy.

USPTO Changes Their Mind, Give Apple iPad Mini Trademark; With a Provision...
It appears that Apple has a really good friend over at the US Patent and Trademark office. After rejecting a trademark for the iPad Mini based on legitimate objections the USPTO has withdrawn those and is granting the trademark with a few minor limitations on how Apple will be using the word Mini. Originally the objections were that the Trademark was not descriptive enough so it was out. Now 7 days later all of those objections are gone.
Apple wants patent on flexible wrapped screen
Apple has filed a patent application for a future "smart" mobile phone with a transparent body and a flexible screen "wrapped" around the entire body of the device. The patent application that is named "Electronic device with wrap around display" describes the phone or other electronic device that has a screen all over the body, and users should have all the interaction with the device using the touch screen without any physical buttons.
Nikon pays Microsoft for licensing
Microsoft believes that every Android device manufacturer earns money by using their patents, and therefore seeks to enter into licensing agreements with each of them to avoid lawsuits. Also this way they can earn money from what is often naively believed to be "pure" Google product that is based on open source software and Linux.
