So Apple has released review samples to the press in order to build up interest in their entry into the smart watch market. It is an interesting move for Apple as they have sent out their $1,000 product to a select group of reviewers just to see what they think. After reading a number of them (some I could not get all the way through) it seems that Apple might not have the magnificent product they were hoping for and even the most Apple faithful sites had a hard time spinning the deficiencies that are there.

So Apple could finally be entering the Smartwach fray this year. At least that is the current rumor and push from Analysts. If this is true it will be a big deal for both Apple and Tim Cook as this will be the first new product type since the introduction of the iPad. Tim Cook has even more riding on this than Apple does as it will be a make or break deal for him to show that he is capable of leading Apple into new markets and not just refreshing the same devices over and over.

Irony is described by Miriam Webster as: a situation that is strange or funny because things happen in a way that seems to be the opposite of what you expected. This is exactly what we have in the current (and immature) market for the smartwatch. Although we have heard Apple’s PR and legal teams cry that Samsung copies everything they do (Tim Cook once claimed Apple as the sole source of innovation) it seems that Apple is falling behind the company that some Apple fans dub “samesung”. At least this is the case in the Smartwatch market.

The smartwatch is the device that everyone wants to make and that many people are already planning to purchase. This is not surprising as there has been quite a bit of news about them in the recent past (despite this being an old concept). Samsung, Apple, and others are pushing out their smart watches as companion devices and, in the case of Samsung, in conjunction with new phones. However the big boys are not the only ones entering the market. Guidertech, a Taiwanese company, is planning to build a smartwatch aimed at the healthcare market.

The Apple fans are all abuzz with excitement as Apple is filing for a trademark on the iWatch name. The speculation is that Apple will set the work on fire with their new and revolutionary smart watch. Sadly Apple could be a little late to this particular party and if their recent iPhone rut is any measure it is unlikely that their iWatch will be anything to crow about either. Apple also faces an interesting market where the concept of the smart watch is still being determined. This gives them both an advantage and a disadvantage. On the one hand they can try and develop something new and unique; on the other they are not known for creating “new” ideas. Apple has always been best at taking existing products/ideas and making them better.
