There is a new update in the never ending rumors surrounding Valve’s Steambox and Controller. After digging into a client update an interesting image popped up for the Steam Controller. It seems that Valve may be considering putting a traditional analog joystick on the controllers. This will be in addition to the existing touch pads that we have seen so much.

One of the things that Gabe Newell and his team at Valve keep claiming is that the delays of the SteamBox are all about the controller. This claim was first heard around CES 2014 when many companies were set to unveil their own products. Now we are hearing that we might be seeing the controller again at Gamescon in Germany next month.

When Microsoft announced Windows 8 there were many consumers and people in the industry that raise their eyebrows. Here was an OS designed to integrate with Microsoft cloud services and gaming products. It seemed like a bad move for Microsoft as it put them in competition with many companies that developed games and software for the PC. Still some held out that even though Windows 8 would be more integrated into the Microsoft Eco system than ever it would not mean they could not use whatever software or application they wanted. Microsoft even seemed to confirm this in a few of their building Windows 8 blog posts.

CES 2014 – Las Vegas, Nevada. As we mentioned in another article it seems that CES is living up to its name as it becomes more and more about consumer electronics (gadgets, TVs, Mobile etc) and the computer industry moves into the background. So with that in mind, just what is going to be the “big thing” at CES 2014? Will we see something PC related as the darling of the show or will we find another item that steals interest and what everyone will be talking about.

The Steam Box Will Not Be Exclusive to nVidia

After a couple of rumors popped up on the internet that Valve had entered into an exclusive agreement with nVidia for their Seam Boxes we finally have an answer from Valve themselves. It seems that they have no intention of being exclusive to nVidia, but plan on future boxes with AMD and even Intel at the core of their graphics. However their initial run of Steam Boxes will feature nothing but nVidia GPUs and primarily Intel Haswell CPUs. In 2014 this will change although we do not have any details on what GPUs will be featured in the full product line.

After the announcement of both the SteamOS and the Steam Machine (most call it the Steam Box) we read more than a few naysayers that were claiming Valve would have a hard time competing in the market. The theory behind these arguments is that the incumbents, Microsoft and Sony, are so entrenched in the market that gamers and regular consumers will not want to move away from those platforms. The problem with that theory is that many consumers are not too happy with the current state of the console gaming market. Anyone that watched the furor that unfolded after the launch of the Xbox One or the mass complaints after the PSN (Play Station Network) knows that this market is not a happy one.

Not all that long ago we reported on the fact that the gaming community was making a shift away from Microsoft (and Apple) and considering Linux as a viable operating system for gaming. One of the leading proponents of this was (and still is) Valve. For those of you that do not know Valve is the company that created HalfLife and many other very popular games. They also have one of the most popular content distribution services on the market.
