After an announcement that they will include ads in new uTorrent client, BitTorrent faced a huge wave of disapproval from its users and have agreed to take a step back. The original plan was to force advertisements for every customer in the upcoming version of uTorrent, but they decided to make it optional. If you consider the general opinion on ads, we believe that most of users will chose not to see them.  The ads will come in the form of sponsored torrents that will reach a user base of 125 million active users worldwide. We must mention that BitTorrent asked their users what they think about the forced ads they were about to implement.

“An absolute disgrace. uTorrent used to be an excellent lightweight client with some great features, now its just a bloated and buggy piece of crap which is now going to be bundled with adware,” user TheSPAWN said on the official forums. Others had a similar opinion, like r00t4rd3d “Well it was a good run utorrent! You were great until a short time ago. Now you are just turning into a bloated mess like all the others. Who ever the genius was to think including ads in your pretty gui would be a good idea should be gently hung with barbed wire.“. A bit harsh, but you have to listen to your customers because customer is always right. We can conclude that the feedback was quite negative and most important unanimous.

Today the company announced that they will give users the option to choose if they want to see the ads, Eric klinker (CEO) said, “We’ve long contemplated an opt-out mechanism for the new offers and advertisements we will be experimenting with. Given all that’s been said here, we’ve decided to release the initial version with an opt-out mechanism. Users should have the choice to opt-out, and we will provide them with ways to do so“. They also said that they wanted to invest the cash from these ads into developing new technologies to improve their file sharing service. The current yearly income is estimated around $15-20 million, so they can allow themselves not to push ads just yet. Now the move is on BitTorrent to find a new way of getting that extra money, but we must say that community will certainly appreciate that their voice is heard.
