World of Warcraft will not become free-to-play anytime soon

While the bigger part, or rather all, of MMORPG developers eventually move to free-to-play business model, Blizzard with World of Warcraft obviously does not want to move in this direction yet.

Lead designer Tom Chilton on GamesCom talked with reporters from portal Polygon and said that this option is not excluded, but it is believed that the transition is quite risky. Although they are aware of the situation that the number of players on MMORPGs that moved to free-to-play has doubled in a short time, no one really knows will the new players stay for a longer period of time and how will this situation develop once they lose interest.

Therefore they will remain faithful to current business model despite the data on declining number of players which is obviously still enough to stop them from even thinking about switching to free-to-play.
