Smallest Ultra HD display made in Japan

Ortustech

Ortustech (Ortus Technology) is a Japanese company that specializes in the development and production of small to medium-sized monitors, mainly for industrial and special applications. Their latest product is a monitor screen with diagonal of 9.6 inches (24.4 cm), which can boast a resolution of 3840 x 2160 which puts it in the category of Ultra HD (4K) monitors.

Such a resolution has pixel density of up to 458 PPI (pixels per inch), which is considerably more than Apple's retina screens. Specifically, Apple's screens with the most pixels Per Inch have "only" 326 PPI for the iPhone 4/4S/5. Ortustech call their screens Hyper Amorphous Silicon TFT (HAST), and it's main feature is allowing up to 30% more light than conventional TFT matrix, which allows the Ortustechs screens to be 30% lighter with the same backlight or the backlight can be reduced by 30% to save energy.

These monitors and screens will find applications in industry of medicine and as monitors for professional video cameras with Ultra HD resolutions in situations where the most important characteristic is sharpness. Unfortunately, these screens have some drawbacks; the viewing angle is a not-so-impressive 160 degrees and it covers only 72% of the NTSC color gamut (complete subset). We see that Ultra HD or 4K displays are coming slowly but surely to the market, and we can expect them to go into mass production soon.
