Smartphone app for 3D scanning

by on17 December 2013 2353 times

Scanning objects in three dimensions becomes increasingly interesting area of research, and goes hand in hand with the rapid development of 3D printing technology. Researchers from ETH Zurich have addressed the available technologies and enhance them with their algorithms for pattern recognition.

Now they have created Android application which is able to create three-dimensional images with the help of cameras of any smartphone. Although the application is still in development, from the demo we can see her working principle. User needs to point the camera at the subject and then move the cell phone while recording in accordance with the instructions that the application shows on the screen.

In the meantime, the software captures a series of images and analyzes them, and converts two-dimensional image data in a spatial, three-dimensional images. Image processing is performed in real time so users will be able to see preliminary results of scan during recording. The technology uses not only photo analysis, but also information about changes in the camera position recorded by accelerometers and gyroscopes from the phone.
