The Gigabyte G1.Assassin2 gets its shot at the Lab Featured

We have now had the G1.Assassin2 up on the test bench for a little over a week now and are ready to talk about our experience with it. The G1.Assassin2 is Gigabyte’s current top of the line x79 motherboard and follows in the same trend as the other boards in the G1 line up. This means that you get the military theme, the built in audio card, and of course the KillerNIC E2100 NPU. However, there are also things that had us concerned about how the G1.Assassin2 might handle certain types of work. So let’s get started and see if all of the new features (like the 3D BIOS and 3D Power) work and if the concerns that we talked about in the design and feature review are valid or not.
Is Microsoft Changing its Mind about Windows 8 on ARM?

Is Microsoft Changing its mind about Windows on ARM? That is the question that many people would like to know now. After hearing that Microsoft was committed to Windows 8 on the ARM platform due to consumer desire for a Windows based tablet (and after they have pretty much designed a tablet OS) many were under the impression that Microsoft would follow suit with other desktop products for the new mobile platform. However, after some new information was conveyed by a Microsoft Executive this might not be the case.
Well now, it looks like there are two leaked pictures on the Internet that are reportedly of AMD’s new Tahiti GPU. The first was leaked onto the Beyond3D Forums. The image there appeared to show two of the next generation GPUs running in Crossfire. The image was enhanced to indicate where the memory chips were on the board and showed a total of 12 chips (again using small squares as indicators). These pictures much rampant speculation about what the memory architecture is as well as debate about the power requirements of this new GPU.
HP to Rlease WebOS to the Open Source Community

HP appears to be taking a leaf out of AMD’s book; when times get tough, move to the open source community. Now I know that last statement is going to bug people, but just to be clear that is not meant as an insult. It is actually a smart thing to do when you cannot afford to fund research and development on your own; you put it in the hands of the people that are eager to build on the platform. AMD has done this more than once in its recent past and it has paid off for them and in the end the market.
We have been saying that the tide is turning against Apple and its legal campaign to stomp out the competition. We have been hearing that Apple’s efforts to ban the Galaxy tab 10.1 in Australia were before the actual case could be heard were starting to decay, but now we have received the final confirmation that the ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been lifted and Samsung can begin selling the tablets in time for Christmas.
Google is working overtime to catch up to and pass other companies in the social networking and tablet market. While there is no doubt that Google+ has quite a ways to go, in the mobile OS department Google is doing considerably better especially once Android 4.0 hits the market. Still there are Apps that are only available on the iPhone and iPad that keep some Apple fans tethered to the iPad. I know there are Apps and games that I really miss from when I had both an iPhone and an iPad
AMD Cancels Krishna and Witchita 28nm CPUs

If you were looking for any additional confirmation that AMD is reorganizing for a major rally then the announcement that they are canceling CPUs before they are launched might be of interest for you. It appears that AMD will be outright cancelling their Krishna and Wichita 28nm CPUs. The stated reason, Global Foundries will not be ready with 28nm in time.
US DoJ Investigating E-Book Price Fixing Too

Although this is not really new information; it appears that there is enough evidence that the major players in the e-book market have been collaborating to keep e-book prices higher than they should be in the US that an investigation has been started into this. The investigation comes just days after a similar announcement from the EU which is focusing on five of the largest publishing companies and Apple.

Although AMD’s future is far from certain we do know that they have been pushing towards lower power and lower cost devices. We have seen these in the form of their new APUs and their A75 and A55 chipsets. We have already tested the performance of the A75, now we are ready to take a look at the performance of one of the A55 based motherboards; the Gigabyte A55M-DS2. We have taken a look at the design choices and features so far and have come away with a bit of confusion as to where this product actually fits into the market. Now that we have put the board through our performance tests, let’s see if we can find out exactly where in the market the A66M-DS2 belong and if it is worth your time and money.

Well, well, well. Remember how we told you that AMD is providing direct hardware and engineering support for the Android-x86 project? Well now we are hearing that Intel is working on Android for x86 too. However, instead of working with the open source community and projects like Android-x86 they are in direct contact with Google.
It looks like the CarrierIQ debacle was quite possibly be a case of Chicken Little meets the digital era with a sinister plot twist. A few weeks ago the news broke that a software researcher (Trevor Eckhart) had found that software that was preinstalled on certain phones appeared to be acting like a keylogger. The hypothesis was based on finding two apps that he could not uninstall or stop. Then he discovered what looked like a link between these two apps and one of the debugging logs (that does record everything that you do). Eckhart announced his findings and a whirlwind of articles ran around the internet a few times.

Computer modding, a discovery of one of the world's greatest subcultures, part 1: "Cultural Diversity"
The PC modding scene is quite a vast one in present day. At it's humble beginnings, quite a few moons ago, it was merely the idea of painting a case to a more peculiar color, installing a light inside of the case somewhere, adding stickers or other similar-style decals, etc., but rarely was anything so much more. Today, however, we have an industry that thrives on not only customizing our own computer periphery, but also custom creation of many components and accessories as well. Present-day computer modifications range anywhere from your basic, average LED case fan add-on, to full-blown scratch-built cases, made out of wood, plastic, steel, aluminum, fiberglass, resin, you name it and someone's making it. Even cooling has gone to the extremes in today's society, where in times of yesteryear, whilst it maintained a basis of adding an additional cooling fan or two to a much-needed area in the case or on a specific component, ie: adding an additional 1 or 2 fans to the CPU's heatsink for example, today's pc's, or "rigs" as we commonly refer to them now, have upwards of extreme liquid or even a TEC (Thermo-Electric-Cooler), also called a Peltier cooler, which transfers electricity throughout it's internal contacts, to create one side as extremely hot, by means of temperature transfer, enabling the surface of which makes contact with the CPU to remain extremely cold, thus also enabling the user to not only have a very, very low CPU temperature, but also enabling them to commit to serious overclocks, while still maintaining such deeply low temperatures.
With SOPA still a hot topic we are hearing about more fallout as lines are being drawn even between one time partners. We have heard that several members of the Business Software Alliance have asked the organization to pull all support from the dangerous and potentially damaging bill. The BSA has complied (for the most part) but has still left enough of an opening that not everyone is satisfied with the way things stand.
