AMD as a corporate entity is facing some rough times. As of their last earnings call we saw that they are still losing money and really do not have a product ready to combat this. The Rage Fury line of GPUs is doing ok in terms of sales, but as of this writing AMD has not been able to take a significant amount of market share from NVIDIA or even Intel. This is not to say that Radeon Graphics, or AMD’s APUs are bad products, it is just that they are not performing as well as the competition. In terms of the APU AMD still cannot compete with the compute power of Intel’s Core series even though the GPU side of the APU is a much better product.
In an unsurprising move Intel has kicked out a new SoC (System on Chip) that bears the label Xeon. The Xeon D 1500 family is intended as to be a one-chip solution for networking devices, storage appliances and micro-servers. The Xeon D also has functions to assist with compute operations which should make it pretty versatile.
On Friday the big news was that NVIDIA had launched two separate suits against Samsung and Qualcomm for patent infringement (International Trade Commission (ITC) and the US District Court in Delaware). In the suits NVIDIA claims that the two companies have willfully infringed on their patented GPU technology and (of course) they would like to start banning devices. So far the list includes the yet to be released Note 4 and Note Edge. The patents in question appear to be Patent Nos. 6198488, 6992667, 7038685, 7015913, 6697063, 7209140 and 6690372.
According to recent rumors it seems that TSMC and Samsung will be able to push out 14nm full node and 16nm half node FinFET products earlier than anticipated. This is certainly going to be good news for many customers of the two foundry companies including Apple and nVidia.
Intel wants to accelerate the development of new autonomous vehicles , and the company also announced the first products which will help them achieve that goal. New line of In-Vehicle Solutions products was launched, and Intel announced additional investments and research aimed at fostering the development of the car towards better informing , assisting and taking control of the vehicle.
Back when nVidia first launched the original Tegra SoC CEO Jen-Hsun Huang stated that it would change the face of media players, phones and tablets. He fully expected Tegra to become more than 50% of nVidia’s business (revenue) and put the green team to work making that happen. After a few months of hearing about the advantages of Tegra I was finally able to put one to the test in the form of the now-gone ZuneHD. It was an impressive experience and I still have and use that device on an almost daily basis.
Intel is expanding its range of SoC solutions that are first used in the preparation of various supporting gadgets like smart watches, bracelets, etc. The newest members of the Quark family are Quark X1010 and Quark X1020D SoCs.
After the 8-core processor codenamed MT6595, MediaTek company also announced the MT6732, its first 64-bit SoC. The chip has four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz and the Mali T760 GPU with support for OpenGL 3.0 and OpenCL 1.2.
Apple's new A8 processor will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, according to sources in Taiwanese TechNews. Samsung would so be left out of orders for the production of processors for Apple.
The new motherboard from MSI codenamed J1800I comes with an Intel Celeron J1800 SoC, and with Intel HD graphics. Despite being embedded, the SoC can clock as fast as 2.4 GHz, TDP is only 10W, so for the cooling is sufficient passive aluminum heatsink what we have so far seen only on the chipset. To ensure stable operation, MSI used Military Class 4 components.
